4 Simple Plant-Based Swaps

4 easy swaps for those looking to incorporate more plant-based options into their lives

Whether you're looking to transition to a fully plant-based lifestyle, or just hoping to make some small changes for health or environmental reasons, having a few plant-based swaps on hand can be really helpful when starting this journey. I know firsthand that wanting to transition to a plant-based lifestyle can feel really overwhelming at first, and, it can be difficult to know where to start! That's why this list includes 4 simple and sustainable swaps you can choose to make as you please, whether that be once in a while, or every day!

I can definitely say that having alternatives for the foods and ingredients I used on a weekly basis (such as cheese or yogurt) was very helpful for me when transitioning into this new lifestyle, and part of the reason I was able to make this change. Little by little, I found that I could still make the recipes I loved, all while slowly crowding out the animal products.

It's important to note that not everyone has access to plant-based alternatives, and because of this, I don't usually include them in my recipes (unless they can be made at home). However, I think that when they are available to you, plant-based alternatives are a great way to make a difference in your health, the environment, and more, when first starting out.

Now let's get into the list and some of my favorite brands/options:

◦ Milk- when I was younger, I had very sensitive skin that was prone to lots of breakouts. I tried almost every type of face wash, and all the different products that were on the market, but none of them seemed to work for me. I struggled with this for a couple of years before experimenting with my diet a bit. I started by taking out dairy, and specifically, milk. Within a few of weeks of cutting just milk out of my diet, and switching over to plant-based options, I was able to completely clear my skin and finally keep it that way. This was the first plant-based swap I ever made, and it was long before the start of my journey in more plant-based living.

There are many different types of plant-based milks, and many different brands! I recommend making homemade whenever possible, but a store-bought option is also great (especially when first starting out)!

Here are a few options to get you started:

◦ Yogurt- Yogurt is a great swap to make when you're first starting out with plant-based eating, as there are so many different options and flavors! Like other yogurts that do include dairy, it's important to note that many plant-based alternatives will also include a good amount of sugar, so if this is something you are looking to limit, I recommend using these brands! I like to buy yogurts that don't have a lot of added sugar, and then use natural sweeteners instead (such as maple syrup or agave), or I will add some fruits and granola in!

◦ Cheese- Coming from a French family, I never thought that cheese was something I was going to limit. I used to put cheese on literally everything! That's why, when I started my journey in plant-based eating, I switched over to a cheese alternative to make the transition a bit easier. The cream cheese is one I continue to buy almost weekly, and both of the brands mentioned here are dairy, soy, and gluten-free!

◦ Burgers- Burgers are another great swap to make! Even if it's just once in a while, swapping a meat-based burger for a veggie burger can make a notable difference. After having tried many different options, my two favorites for replicating the taste and texture of meat-based burgers are Dr. Praeger's "perfect burger", as well as Beyond Burgers! There are so many different options out there, and also many amazing recipes to make homemade veggie burgers, so I recommend experimenting to find one (or more) you love!

As with anything, small steps make a difference. Utilizing even just one of these plant-based alternatives can make a notable impact in your life, your health, and even in the environment!
