5 Sustainable Tips for Healthy Hair

Five simple tips for strong, healthy, and nourished hair

As someone who used straighten her hair every single day for about 4 years (and color/dye it on multiple occasions) I know how tough it can be to get back to healthy, nourished, and happy hair! I also know it can be a challenge to find products that are vegan, sustainable, and actually nourishing (especially for wavy/curly hair), so I wanted to share some tips and tricks that I've found helpful along the way so far:

5 sustainable tips for healthy hair 🌻

🌱 Limit heat- as mentioned above, I used to straighten my hair every single day- and not surprisingly, what made the biggest difference in my hair health was letting it be naturally wavy! Although this was a whole journey in itself, embracing my natural hair was a big step not only in self love, but also in healing my hair. By limiting constant drying and straightening, you give your hair the chance to be so much healthier and less damaged.

🌱 Look into your hair products - unfortunately, so many hair products are full of chemicals and ingredients that can be really damaging to both our hair, and more generally, our health. Opting for a natural shampoo and conditioner with clean ingredients is a nice way to show your hair some love and minimize toxins. If possible, consider using a shampoo and conditioner bar to limit plastic packaging/waste as well! I’m currently using (and loving) a vegan shampoo and conditioner bar from Lush that I'll link below:

🌱 Eat a variety of fruits, veggies, whole grains, and nuts - like with almost anything, what we eat also has an impact on this area of our health! Eating a variety of whole foods allows you to get a wide range of important nutrients that help keep your hair healthy and shiny.

🌱 Limit coloring - many dyes used today are unfortunately full of chemicals and ingredients that can damage and dry out our hair. When possible, limit coloring or potentially opt for a more natural alternative, such as henna.

🌱Consider making your own products- when possible, making your own products can be a fun and creative way to help your hair! Homemade products are nice because they limit the need for packaging, and they also allow you to be sure of what ingredients you are putting on your hair. One of my favorites is making a coconut oil as a hair mask! Coconut oil is a very hydrating and natural ingredient- and applying it before washing my hair always feels like a nice self care moment 🧖🏻‍♀️

*Note: Coconut oil is not recommended for all hair types, so be sure to do some research on what natural products might work best for your hair before trying
