How to support your gut health and why it's so important to physical and mental wellbeing

I like to think of our gut as the center of our health, as it plays a crucial role in supporting both our physical and mental wellbeing. In terms of physical factors, the state of our gut health has been linked to inflammation, weight, disease, heart health, brain health and so much more. Not only is the gut where our food gets absorbed, which allows us to have energy and stay alive, but it is also home to billions of bacteria that allow our bodies to function properly. By supporting our gut health, we can make a direct improvement on our physical health.

Our gut is also said to be where approximately 90% of our serotonin is produced, making it a crucial factor in mental wellbeing. Serotonin helps to regulate our mood, can bring about feelings of happiness, supports good sleep, and is said to even play a role in helping our brain cells communicate with one another. Since our gut is home to such an important hormone (one that impacts our everyday mood) it is important that we take extra care of our gut in order to also take care of our mental health.

How can I improve my gut health? Not surprisingly, one of the best ways to support your gut health is through food choices. By limiting highly processed foods and centering meals on fresh fruits, veggies, legumes, and whole grains, you can allow you gut to heal and produce the bacteria it needs to keep you feeling healthy.

Reducing the amount of stress in your life whenever possible is another great way to keep you gut healthy, as stress (especially chronic stress) can negatively affect every area of your life, including your gut health. Meditation, walking, workouts, getting out in nature, and/or talking to a loved one are great ways to reduce stress in everyday life.
