3 things you can start doing today to help your heart

At the heart of our lives is our health, and at the center of our health is our heart. So basically, heart health is very important!

Our heart has many functions, and it is constantly working to keep us alive and healthy. Unfortunately, heart disease has become the leading cause of death in the United States, with it being estimated to be the cause of around 1 in 4 deaths ( Thankfully, there are steps we can take to help support our heart health and reduce our chances of encountering heart disease- through sustainable lifestyle and nourishment habits.

Keep reading for a few simple tips on how to start improving your heart health today, and a list of some heart healthy foods to include on your grocery list:

Simple tips for improving heart health:

1. Focus on whole foods- more and more scientific evidence is coming out to continue to support the idea that plant-based diets can not only prevent heart disease, but even reverse it. No other diet has been shown to do this, and with the multiple ties between animal products and heart disease, one of the best things you can do to improve your heart health is incorporate more whole foods (fruits, veggies, legumes, nuts, seeds, and some grains) into your diet. If you are not big on these foods, I suggest starting small! Incorporate one serving of whole foods into one meal a day, and progressively continue to increase this amount.

2. Move your body- although the recommendation for exercise is at least 30 minutes a day, finding even 5-10 minutes to get moving is a great way to start helping your heart. Whether it's a 5 minute walk outside, or a 10 minute at-home workout, finding ways to get moving can not only help your heart health, but it can also help your overall mental and physical wellbeing.

3. Find a stress reduction method that works for you- whether it's meditation, running, or even screaming into a pillow, having a stress reduction method is incredibly important to heart health. Prolonged periods of stress can have a serious impact on our heart (and overall wellbeing), but many of us cannot always remove the source of the stress (whether that be a job, deadline, etc...). If removing the source of stress is not possible, it's important to have a healthy way of coping with stress in order to keep our hearts, bodies, and minds, healthy and happy.
